The Inaugural Sydney International Workshop on Synergies in Astronomy and Medicine
Sydney, Australia, 14-16 December 2009
Astronomy
and Medicine share many similar demands for increasingly sophisticated
and diverse imaging techniques as well as associated cutting-edge
instrumentation technologies and advanced software tools for
multi-dimensional data storage, manipulation and processing. This
workshop will provide an international forum for exploring and
consolidating these synergies, exchanging ideas and identifying
opportunities for knowledge and technology transfer across the two
research disciplines, and on to industry and academia.
Topics covered:
Imaging – 3D reconstruction, multi-modality and co-registration
Instrumentation - new detector technologies, astro-photonics
Data - visualization, acquisition, multi-dimensional handling techniques
Invited speakers:
- Prof. Alyssa Goodman, Founding Director, Initiative in Innovative Computing Astronomical Medicine Project, Harvard University
- Prof. Simon Cherry, Chair, Biomedical Engineering, University of California at Davis
- Prof. Johan Nuyts, Division of Nuclear Medicine, Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven
- Prof. David Hawkes, Center for Medical Image Computing, University College London
- Prof. Terry Peters, Robarts Research Institute, University of Western Ontario
- Prof. Mike Irwin, Director, Cambridge Astronomical Survey Unit, University of Cambridge
- Dr Nicholas Walton, Project Scientist, AstroGrid and PathGrid, University of Cambridge
- Prof. Don Figer, Director, Rochester Imaging Detector Laboratory, Rochester Institute of Technology

Scientific Program (final)
All
contributed talks are 30 mins (25+5 mins). Powerpoint presentations may
be uploaded to the desktop PC provided at the venue. Speakers who
prefer to use their own laptops should ensure they are properly set up
before the session in which their talk is scheduled. All speakers
should briefly meet with the Session Chair before each session.
Posters
should be presented in standard A0 format (841mm x 1189mm) and may be
mounted on poster boards with pins or velcro. Further tips on poster
presentations are provided in this poster guidelines document.
Location
The meeting will be held at the University of Sydney,
Australia’s oldest and most distinguished University, just minutes from
the Sydney CBD. The University is a subtle amalgam of historical
sandstone buildings and contemporary architecture, in an immaculately
landscaped garden setting. The workshop venue is the Veterinary Science
Conference Centre (VSCC), which houses state-of-the-art conference
facilities. The meeting will be fully catered for by the University’s
Gold Licence Caterer, with morning and afternoon refreshments provided,
as well as a gourmet networking lunch.
Here is a University campus map. The VSCC is located at E7. Directions on how to find the VSCC using public transport can be found here.
A
wireless network will be available for internet use by registered
delegates. Details will be provided at the registration desk.
